How age is calculated
Age is calculated by subtracting the date of birth from the reference date (today, or any date you choose). The result is expressed in years, months, and remaining days — accounting for variable month lengths and leap years.
Note: different cultures count age differently. In Western countries, a newborn is 0 years old. In some East Asian traditions, a newborn is considered 1 year old at birth (Korean age system).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my exact age?
Subtract your date of birth from today's date. The whole years give your age in years; the remaining months and days complete the exact age. This calculator does it automatically.
How old will I be in a future year?
Change the "Age on" date field to any future date. The calculator will show your age on that specific day.
What is a leap year and how does it affect age?
A leap year occurs every 4 years (with exceptions for century years) and has 366 days. People born on February 29 celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years. The age calculation is unaffected — it's still the same number of years.
